Cliopsis krohni Troschel, 1854 morpha modesta (Pelseneer, 1887c)

Overview

This is a small naked pelagic snail, up to 0.3 cm long, with a completely transparent body and the visceral organs are seen through the body wall. The body is oval shaped, balloon-like and the posterior gill is ring-shaped. It is a carnivorous species, living in all oceans in the upper water layers (Cliopsis k. modesta).

Taxonomic Description

The body is round posteriorly but oval anteriorly due to the small head. Integument transparent. The visceral mass does not fill the body and does not reach the posterior pole. The posterior gill is ring-shaped or hexagonal and has four thin, short rays without fringes. There is no lateral gill. The dark chromatophores are found near the posterior gill and in the middle of the body. Lateral footlobe broad, no posterior lobe; median foot tubercle present. Buccal organs similar to those in the morph krohni. Proboscis long, but not like krohni in which it is twice as long as the body.
Body length up to 3 mm.

Juveniles

A special description is not available.

Reproduction

This species is protandric hermaphrodite.

Ecology

This species is a carnivore.
