S. buccalis is a dark, purple-black, brown or grey sea cucumber. It is a small (70-90 (110) mm), firm and cylindrical species, with a smooth tegument. Its spicules are small nodular buttons (S. buccalis spicules). It is found in coastal habitats south to temperate regions, below stones on intertidal flats.
