H. (Platyperona) difficilis is a dark yellow-brown sea cucumber with yellow tentacles. It is a small (60-80 (100) mm), cylindrical, pliable speices with a smooth tegument. Its cuvierian tubules are readily ejected. Spicules are well developed tables, but buttons are characteristically flat with a longitudinal optical discontinuity (H. difficilis spicules). This species is found on reefs and in coastal areas, below rocks.

Remarks: See Clark, 1946 for a discussion of problems with this and related species taxonomy.
