Description:
Body round, slender.
Prostomium truncate, a little broader than long, divided by a longitudinal furrow into two parts, anteriorly more or less incised, fused to the first segment, with three antennae and two palps. Palps short, articulated, with an indistinct base. Lateral antennae short, filamentous, median antenna longer, inserted near the hind edge of the prostomium. No eyes.
Peristomium limited to lips.
First segment achaetous, with two pairs of filamentous tentacular cirri. First chaetiger with dorsal cirrus about as long as tentacular cirri, the following dorsal cirri shorter. Ventral cirri similar. Parapodia subbiramous: anterior notopodia represented by an acicula only, posterior notopodia with one smooth spine.
Neuropodial chaetae all simple, finely toothed on one side (S. klatti-detail).
Pygidium with two filamentous cirri.
Pharynx eversible, without armament.

Size:
Up to 13 mm for 71 segments.

Colour:
Brown, with two pigmented spots on the posterior corners of the prostomium and the fist segment.

Habitat:
On mud or sandy mud, from 10 to 680 m deep.

Distribution:
North Sea, Kattegat, Skagerrak, Öresund, North Atlantic and Mediterranean.
