Body long and narrow, almost cylindrical. Prostomium rounded triangular, with two eyespots. Chaetae of segment 3 on conspicuous, anteriorly orientated notopodia, fine and longer than the normal notopodial chaetae, 4-10 on each side. Gills in two groups only slightly separated mid-dorsally, the three gills of each group in a more or less straight transverse row. All gills connected by a high membrane, reaching to the chaetae of segment 3. Fifteen thoracic segments with notopodia with relatively short chaetae, the posterior twelve also with neuropodia with uncini. The posterior four thoracic segments clearly longer than the preceeding ones. Twelve abdominal uncinigerous segments. Thoracic uncini with two rows of teeth with 5-7 teeth in each row, abdominal uncini with three rows of teeth (E. vanelli-detail). Pygidium with two lateral round lobes.
Up to 17 mm.
A thin, weak secretion encrusted with a few foreign particles.
In alcohol pale yellow.
On clay bottoms, often mixed with sand, shell fragments or stones. Also on hard bottoms with some clay; from 15 to 313 m.
Portugal, Morocco, Great Meteor Bank, Guinea. Barents Sea, Tromsø, south and west Norwegian coast to Trondheimfjord, Swedish west coast, north coast of Jutland, Skagerrak, Fladen Ground.
