Paraliparis bathybius Collett, 1879

Diagnosis: head length 20% of SL or less; horizontal diameter of eye 27-34% of head length; maxillary length less than half head length. Teeth simple, in 25-30 oblique, closely spaced rows. Gill opening above pectoral fin. Lower pectoral fin lobe of 3-4 distinctly separate rays, 67-85% of head length. Size: to 253 mm SL.

Habitat: benthic or benthopelagic. In deep, cold water usually from 1,000 to 1,850 m, occasionally at 600-700 m; possibly gregarious at times. Food: pelagic amphipods, benthic gastropods and mysids. Reproduction: apparently spawns during summer, possibly also at other times; may have over 400 ripe eggs up to 4.5 mm diameter.

Distribution: Norwegian Sea, Faroe Trough, north of Faroe Is., east of Iceland, south of Jan Mayen I., west of Bear I. Elsewhere, West Greenland and Baffin Bay.
