Artediellus scaber Knipowitsch, 1907

Diagnosis: head and back with dermal knobs; occipital protuberances slightly developed; barbels on dermal knobs before dorsal fins, on occipital protuberances, on upper part of eyes, on preoperculum and on upper jaw; nasal spine always absent; chin pore single. D VII-IX + 12-14; A 10-13; P 18-23. Lateral line pores 21-31; sub-orbital sensory canal with second pair of pores. Colour: head greyish-brown above, body lighter, with large, irregular dark spots forming crossbands; stripes on all fins orange, pectoral tips white; oval black spot on hind part of spinous dorsal fin in males. Size: to 8.4 cm, usually 4-8 cm.

Habitat: benthic on sand-mud bottoms, mostly in brackish waters, at O-50 m (occasionally to 100 m), with bottom temperatures mostly near , to or below O °C and salinities of 10-15ä. Food: small bottom invertebrates. Reproduction: probably August-September; eggs demersal, about 80, diameter about 2.7 mm.

Distribution: extreme north-eastern part of Clofnam area (south-eastern part of Barents Sea, off Novaya Zemlya). Elsewhere, eastwards from Kara Sea to northern part of Bering Sea, Arctic coast of Canada (McAllister, 1990).
