Sebastes viviparus Krøyer, 1845

Diagnosis: dorsal fin with 14-16 spines and 12-15 (mostly 13-14) rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 6-8 rays; pectoral fin with 16-19 (mostly 17-18) rays, 30-33 (mostly 32) scales on lateral line. Vertebrae 29-31. Colour: bright red, sides with several large dark bands. Size: to 35 cm, usually to 25 cm.

Habitat: benthic on rocky bottoms, close to the shore, between 10 and 150 m, but also recorded at 760 m. Behaviour: gregarious but to a far smaller degree than the other Sebastes. Food: various small crustaceans and young fishes. Reproduction: ovoviviparous, periods of insemination of the females and fertilization of oocytes unknown; release of larvae from May to August.

Distribution: along the Norwegian coast from Kattegat northward to Tanafjord in Finmark, rare off the coast of Bear I., northern part of the North Sea, around Shetland Is., coasts of Scotland, northern England, Wales and Ireland, rare in the English Channel; westward on the Rockall Bank, common around the Faroes and Iceland (rare along the northern coast and absent on the eastern coast); sporadic off East Greenland.
