Arnoglossus thori Kyle, 1913

Diagnosis: second ray of dorsal fin very long, with a conspicuous dark, fringed broad membrane. Lateral line with 51-56 scales. Colour: eyed side brownish or greyish with darker spots or blotches on lateral line, one behind the anterior curve and one near the distal end; generally a series of dark spots along caudal fin base; all fins sprinkled with small dark spots; first 3 or 4 dorsal finrays generally blackish in adults but only the elongate second ray is dark in immature fishes. Size: to about 18 cm SL.

Habitat: benthic on the upper 100 m of the continental shelf. Food: small fishes and invertebrates. Reproduction: between April and July.

Distribution: western Mediterranean. In the eastern Atlantic from Ireland to about 23° N along African coast.
