Coryphaenoides zaniophorus Vaillant, 1888

Diagnosis: head quite compressed, 17.5-19.6% of body length, interorbital less than one-fifth head length; snout pointed and short (less than eye diameter), sub-orbital ridge distinct, scales present above and below snout; chin barbel strong and fleshy, conical; mouth close under end of snout. First dorsal fin with 11-12 finrays, the second finray serrated, its origin slightly behind pectoral fin base; second dorsal fin beginning just behind first, with very short finrays; pectoral fin with 18-20 finrays; pelvic fin with 8 (rarely 9-10) finrays, inserted below dorsal fin origin. Scales with long spinules in oblique series. Anus immediately before anal fin origin. Pyloric caeca 9-11, short and simple. Colour: brownish. Size: to 43 cm TL.

Habitat: benthopelagic at 830-2,165 m. Food: gammarids, copepods, polychaete worms, molluscs. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Madeira and off Morocco northward to off western Ireland. Elsewhere, southward to the Canaries and Mauritania.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
