Ciliata septentrionalis Collett, 1875

Diagnosis: small supplementary barbels on fold of skin fringing upper jaw. Mouth large, extending well behind eye, upper and especially lower jaws more than half of head length. First dorsal finrays 1, second dorsal finrays 48-53; first anal finrays 42-44. Vertebrae 45-46. Colour: brown, lighter ventrally. Size: to 17 cm SL.

Habitat: between 30-90 m, rarely shallower at 9-11 m, not littoral. Food: mostly decapod crustaceans, lobsters, crabs, mysids, polychaetes. Reproduction: late March and early April.

Distribution: north-eastern Atlantic from off British Isles to Oxfjord and Iceland.
