Arctogadus glacialis Peters, 1874

Diagnosis: barbel on chin usually absent or obsolete. Eye large, orbit about equal to snout. First dorsal finrays 10-13, second dorsal finrays 16-21, third dorsal finrays 20-25; first anal finrays 19-24, second anal finrays 19-26. Vertebrae 58-61. Gillrakers 28-34. Colour: dark, back and sides blackish-brown, belly slightly lighter, all fins black. Size: to 41 cm SL, usually 25-30 cm.

Habitat: salt water, pelagic, under drifting ice at a depth of 10-25 m in March. Behaviour: gregarious, in shoals; migrations are not known exactly. Food: fish, mostly Boreogadus saida, small amphipods inhabiting lower surface of drifting ice, rarely calanoids. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: eastern coast of Greenland north of 70° N in the area and western part of North Polar Basin.
