Synonyms:

Clupea sprattus Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat., ed. X: 318 (Habitat in Oceano Europeo).

Three subspecies have been recognized: the Atlantic, the Mediterranean (including Black Sea), and the Baltic ones. However, the differences between the first two are considered not essential (Tortonese & Cautis, 1968).
