Talismania homoptera Vaillant, 1888

Diagnosis: head large, more than one-third of body; snout pointed, greater than eye; upper jaw reaching to about hind border of eye; vomerine teeth strong and Iying on a single transverse plate just before tips of palatines. Pyloric caeca 10-11. Dorsal and anal fins far back, more or less equal and opposite to each other; upper pectoral finray(s) filamentous, reaching to beyond pelvic fin base. Scales small, 52-55 in lateral line. Vertebrae 17-19 + 29-32 = 47-50. Colour: blackish, with a black wart-like spot near base of sixth dorsal finray. Size: to at least 29 cm.

Habitat: engybenthic at 560-1,690 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: a single record off Morocco. Elsewhere, southward to 4° S, also western central Atlantic (T. oregoni records).

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
