Conocara salmonea Gill & Townsend, 1897

Diagnosis: body moderately elongate, rounded, but compressed posteriorly, head large, about one-third of body. Premaxillae forming a sharp plate-like 'visor'; upper gillrakers less than 3. Pyloric caeca 2. Dorsal fin far back on body, its origin a little behind anal fin origin; anal fin longer than dorsal fin, with 25-27 finrays. Colour: brownish. Size: to at least 73 cm.

Habitat: engybenthic at about 2,400-4,200 m, usually below 3,000 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: spent females have been found in May with large ovarian eggs (to 4.2 mm in diameter).

Distribution: off sourh-western Ireland. Elsewhere, Cape Verde Is. and in western Atlantic from Atlantic side of Antilles; also eastern Pacific.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
