Centrophorus uyato (Rafinesque, 1810)

Diagnosis: only first few upper teeth on either side of symphysis erect and symmetrical or nearly symmetrical, remaining teeth strongly oblique; lower teeth with smooth cutting edges. Inner corner of pectoral fins greatly extended and moderately narrowly pointed. First dorsal fin height and base length (measured from anterior origin of spine) 6.5 and 11.0% of total length respectively; first dorsal fin higher than second. Dermal denticles close-set, but not overlapping, without stalks, thorn-like, with dorsal ridges converging towards posterior tip. Colour: dark greyishbrown, paler ventrally, fins darker than upper body, but with whitish or transparent tips. Size: to about 900 mm.

Habitat: benthic on outer shelf and upper slope at 50 1,400 m, generally 500-1,000 m. Food: teleost fishes and squids. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: western Mediterranean, eastern Atlantic northward to Gibraltar. Elsewhere, southward to Angola; also, Gulf of Mexico, off southern Mozambique and Taiwan.
