Carcharhinus longimanus (Poey, 1865)

Diagnosis: snout short and rounded. Teeth serrate, uppers broadly triangular, erect anteriorly, oblique posteriorly, lowers with broad heavy erect cusps, bases smooth. First dorsal fin noticeably large, apex rounded; pectoral fins long, apex rounded; inter-dorsal ridge present; lower caudal lobe somewhat round. Colour: bronze/grey dorsally, white ventrally; tips of first dorsal (in some), pectorals, and lower caudal with white tips. Size: to 350 cm TL, usually less than 270 cm TL.

Habitat: epipelagic in open ocean waters outside continental shelf; relatively sluggish swimmers, but able to make quick bursts. Food: fishes, squid, portunid crabs. Reproduction: viviparous, 6-9 embryos born at 75 cm TL.

Distribution: Madeira; occurrence in Mediterranean where, all warm seas.
