Diagnosis: body oblong. Occipital scales extending forward to the anterior margin of eye. Molar teeth in two series; gillrakers 9 10 lower, 5-6 upper. D Xll + 9 11; A 111 + 10. 8(9) rows of scales on opercle. Lateral line scales 51 60 to caudal base. Colour: silvery red, more or less bright; often small blue spots along the rows of scales of sides; dark red mark at the origin of lateral line and upper margin of opercle; fins dusky or pinkish; caudal with a narrow red margin; inside of whitish; the transverse red bands mentioned in the literature are a coloration. Size: to 42 cm SL, usually 20-25 cm.
Habitat: inshore waters, demersal on hard bottoms or sandy bo to 250 m (more common to ]20 m). Gregarious; spawning migr. to the coast. Food: omnivorous, mainly carnivorous (benthi vertebrates, small fish). Reproduction: intermittent spawning from to November according to the latitude; hermaphroditic protogy maturity at 1 4 years; fecundity 60,200 406,800 (16 35 cm).
Distribution: south-western Mediterranean (Morocco, Algeria); Atlantic from Gibraltar to Angola; the Canaries.
