Brotulotaenia brevicauda Cohen, 1974

Diagnosis: body depth 5.5-8.6 times in SL (body deeper than in the other two species from the area); head 3.2-4.1 in SL. Dorsal finrays 79-84; anal finrays 58-64. Colour: dark to black. Size: to about 300 mm SL.

Habitat: meso- and upper bathypelagic in tropical waters. Food: no data. Reproduction: oviparous.

Distribution: one specimen from off north- western Spain. Elsewhere, about 10 specimens from tropical parts of Atlantic.

Note - The following other genera belong to Ophidiidae: Barathrites, Bassogigas, Benthocometes, Bathyonus, Monomitopus, Parabassogigas, Thalassobathia.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
