Melanocetus johnsoni Günther, 1864

Diagnosis: females with least outside width between frontals 13.5-28.6% . SL; illicial length 32.4-60.8% SL. D 13-17; P 17-23. Skin relatively thick. Males, juvenile females and larvae with a concentration of subdermal pigment on caudal peduncle. Other characters in key.

Habitat: 100-2,000 m, rarely deeper. Food, Reproduction: see suborder.

Distribution: all oceans. Northernmost record in Clofnam area 53° N.
