Diagnosis: a single, simple or branched escal appendage in front of escal pore.

Habitat, Food, Reproduction: see suborder.

Distribution: all oceans, several large females, some with parasitic males, recorded off Iceland and south-western Greenland, probably expatriates. Besides the specimens from Iceland, a single not previously published record from north-east of the Azores inside Clofnam area (FFS Anton Dohrn, May 1979, St. 389/79).

Eggs, larvae and young stages. Bertelsen, 1951: 134-137, fig. 90 (larvae), pl. n. num. (ontogeny).
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
