Greek pyrrhos, flame-colored

This division comprises the dinoflagellates (Greek dinos, whirling) which include a large and diverse assemblage of unicellular, biflagellate, coccoid, filamentous, palmelloid and amoeboid forms. Members can be autotrophic or heterotrophic (including myzocytotic, parasitic, saprophytic, and symbiotic).
