Coxal plates 1 to 4 elongate and forming a regular shield, plate 1 broadly produced anteriorly; epimeral plate 3 posterodistal angle with a large upturned tooth. Head with prominent lateral lobes, rather narrower in male than in female; eyes very large, oval to kidney-shaped, purple or brown. Antenna 1 peduncle article 1 broad, articles 2 and 3 not compressed, flagellum equal to, or a little shorter than the length of the peduncle, up to about 10-articulate; accessory flagellum 3 or 4-articulate. Antenna 2 in female slender, about equal to the length of antenna 1, flagellum short, about 8-articulate; antenna 2 in male longer than the body, flagellum very slender, filiform, with calceoli. Gnathopod 1 simple, basis robust, setose, propodus and carpus about equal, propodus tapering distally, inner posterior margin with several short spines, dactylus small. Gnathopod 2 very slender, minutely subchelate, propodus broad and a little shorter than the carpus. Pereiopods 3 and 4 robust, setose, in male setae plumose. Uropod 1 elongate, weakly spinose; uropod 2 inner ramus constricted distally; uropod 3 peduncle broad, inner ramus a little shorter than the outer one, rami naked in female, inner margins with plumose setae in male. Telson oval, entire, distal margin straight or weakly convex.
Up to about 12 mm.
Pale yellow with an orange tinge, or pinkish with large yellowish brown patches.
Depth range from 10 to 800 metres.
North-East Atlantic, North Sea; European coasts from from Haugesund and Shetlands to the western Mediterranean, and North Africa to Senegal.
