Description:
Female carapace with three to five pairs of not very strongly defined transverse folds, with a strong acute tooth on either side of the frontal lobe and another smaller tooth behind. In the male there are only two pairs of transverse folds but there is a smooth longitudinal carina on either side nearly parallel with the lower edge. Eye well developed. Postero-lateral corners of pereionite 5 rounded in the female, produced to an acute point in the male. Telson a little shorter than the uropod peduncles, its distal portion longer than the proximal and with eight or nine pairs of lateral spines.
Telson long, postanal part narrowed, with several pairs of lateral spines.

Size:
Up to 9 mm.

Habitat:
Found on muddy sand mixed with some coarser material.

Depth range:
About 0 and 90 metres.

Distribution in the North Sea:
Southern and northern North Sea, Skagerrak.

World distribution:
A Mediterranean-Boreal species of the upper shelf, from Norway to the Bay of Biscay and in the Mediterranean.
