Body robust, pleosome segments 1 to 3 weakly carinate. Coxal plate 1 broad distally. Head with a short curved rostrum reaching to about the end of peduncle article 1 of antenna 1; eyes extremely large, oval, largely coalesced dorsally, purple in colour. Female antenna 1 peduncle articles 1 and 2 about equal, article 3 small, flagellum shorter than peduncle, about 8-articulate. Male antenna 1 peduncle article 1 much longer than 2, flagellum setose, article 1 elongate. Female antenna 2 almost twice length of 1, flagellum about 15-articulate. Male antenna 2 two-thirds body length, flagellum filiform. Gnathopod 1 carpal lobe broad and densely setose reaching to proximal palmar angle of propodus, palm convex, setose, palmar margin with many small hooked setae, dactylus slender and as long as palm. Gnathopod 2 carpal lobe very long and slender, propodus more than 4 times as long as wide, palmar setae similar to gnathopod 1. Pereiopods 3 and 4 short, robust, densely setose, dactylus minute. Pereiopods 5 and 6 also densely setose, basis with few plumose setae, dactylus very small. Pereiopod 7 elongate, robust, spinose. Telson entire, apex convex.
Up to 10 mm.
Pale yellowish, mottled with brown.
Depth range from 5 to 75 metres; prefers fine sand; locally common.
North East Atlantic; North Sea; widespread along the European coast from western Norway to the Mediterranean.
