Description
Hooks: 11-14; anterior teeth: none; posterior teeth: 16.
Maximum adult body length: 31 mm; tail: 19-25 %.
Body firm, broadest at region of tail septum; transversal musculature on trunk; head wide; hooks serrated in juveniles; one pair of very long lateral fins both on trunk and tail; lateral fins partially rayed, rounded. Collarette absent; gut diverticula absent; eyes without pigment. Seminal vesicles conical; position of seminal vesicles: touching or close to posterior fins and well separated from tail fin. Ovaries short with egg pouches or brood sacs; ova large. Adhesive papillae and adhesive organs absent; apical glands present.

Distribution: deep-mesopelagic to bathypelagic; has a very wide geographical distribution.
