Hooks: 10-12; anterior teeth: 6-10; posterior teeth: 20-35.
Maximum adult body length: 22 mm; tail: 29-34 %.
Body firm, opaque; transversal musculature absent; head very large; hooks not serrated. Fin bridge absent. Anterior fins short, fully rayed, rounded; posterior fins short, fully rayed, angular. Collarette absent; gut diverticula absent. Large eyes without pigment. Seminal vesicles conical; position of seminal vesicles: neither touching posterior fins nor tail fin. Ovaries of medium length, reaching to region of ventral ganglion; ova large. Adhesive papillae and adhesive organs absent. Apical glands absent.

Distribution: deep meso- and bathypelagic; cosmopolitan.
