Most members of this subclass lack an external shell, although several orders have reduced-external, or poorly developed internal, shells. The body is typically a thick, elongated oval. The mantle, which often has colorful, ornate designs, covers the animal's back. At the head are one or two pairs of tentacles; some have foot corner extensions that appear as an additional pairs of tentacles.
