P. rufescens is a small (100 mm), soft and wrinkled, brown or red-black sea cucumber with 18 tentacles. The spicules are wheels (P. rufescens spicules), sigmoid bodies are lacking. P. rufescens is found under rocks inshore on reefs and in coastal regions in tropics.
